Today in Western Civ Mr. Schick was absent so we watched a video on ancient Greece. I miss Gracee </3
So anyway here are my notes:
In the early 5th century BC, Persia was the greatest empire and Athens was a threat to that power.
Hoplites were the heart of the Athenian force along with almost every male citizen. Athenians were still outnumbered 2:1.
490 BC- Pheidippides mission was to run for help from Sparta. He ran 140 Miles in two days.
Sparta refused.
Athenians still won, killing 6000 Persians in one day.
Athenian general Themistocles fought at Marathon. He rose to power through democracy. He thought the Persians still posed a threat, so he improved their strategy with the trireme. Triremes were very expensive and they wouldn't have been able to make so many if it wasn't for the silver they discovered in their territory. At first, the Athenians wanted to divide the money among themselves, but Themistocles persuaded them otherwise.
In 486 BC, Persian King Darius died and his son, Xerxes took his place. Xerxes' first order of business was to avenge his father's lose at Athens.
Themistocles ordered the evacuation of Athens so they could avoid any conflict on land.
I got to 22.30 by the end of class so I guess I'll just watch the rest over the weekend.
Feel better Mr. Schick :)
